Joshua Tree Wanderlust

There is something about the desert that calls to me. I long for it whenever I am not there, and that happens to be very often. I love the landscape, the purples and pinks of the horizon. I can breathe there, openly.

The desert makes me dance. Where do you want to go? Are you an ocean or a desert kinda gal?

NYE 2017

New Years is a celebration of finally being done with the old and ringing in the new- for many it means a fresh start or maybe a new chapter in their life. Exciting!

There are aspects of New Years Eve that can be stressful though- where to go, what to wear, etc. are all important aspects of how the night will turn out.

But if we put aside the stress, we can see that NYE gives us the perfect excuse to dress up! There’s something about the sparkle, bubbly champagne, and promise of a new year that makes us want to look (and feel!) amazing. For some, this means silky off the shoulder tops, luxurious faux furs, and glitter eye shadow!

For many others, it’s important for comfort and style to collide on a night that may very well be filled with dancing until dawn- this is one of the many reasons we love these stretchy velvet leggings!

Another comfy and fun option is a silky bomber jacket with dramatic makeup and your favourite jeggings! We love this pale pink one, but we also have a classic black one for those who don’t stray far from their uniform colour.

Above all, NYE is about having fun with your best friends- even if that means being cozy on the couch in your favourite hoodie and sweatpants, snacking on chocolate til the clock strikes 12!

Happy New Year to you and yours!

Thanks to Insomniak Media for the photos

The Fall Tunic

Is it winter yet, or is it still fall? For a lot of people, November means winter- but since there’s no snow on the ground (knock on wood) we can, for a brief time, ignore the Christmas decorations popping up and just enjoy the fall weather.

This is where the long sleeved tunic comes in! We shot these pictures on a particularly nice fall day, but we suggest our absolute favourite leggings (for when it gets undeniably colder), that can be paired and layered under anything. Tunic + Leggings= instant fall outfit that transitions nicely into winter.

This forest green tunic foregoes a waistline to give us a sophisticated baby-doll cut. The crochet lace detailing along the neck is a major feature, but we also love the 3/4 length crocheted bell sleeves.

We love this button down rose printed tunic for its feminine, yet casual cut- it’s easy to dress up with some jewelry and the right shoes, or dress down with your fall boots and and blanket scarf.

And for the boho babe in all of us, there’s the tunic dress in burgundy, with a slightly rustic feel to it.

This one has an elastic waistline and is super comfortable- the lace up neckline complete with hanging tassels is our favourite detail.

Another bohemian inspired piece we love is the deep purple paisley printed tunic!

Or, my personal favourite, the classical drapy black tunic.

Brunette the Label

img_0578-copyWhen Brunette the Label designer, Miriam Alden comes to town with her fresh new line, you celebrate!  And that’s just what we did.  We threw a little bash in her honour to celebrate the arrival of the newest goods from one of our favourite labels.  Her statement sweatshirts are as cozy as they are cool and we just can’t get enough of the cheeky quotes.  Try as hard as we might, we can’t pick a favourite- however, the newest crews are in heavy rotation in our fall wardrobes.   Babes Supporting Babes, Who Run The World and the iconic “Role Call” crews each hold a special place in our hearts… and closets.

So what was Miriam really like?  She was honest to goodness sweet, down to earth and incredibly friendly.  Miriam took time to have genuine conversations with all who attended and give her feedback in change-room decisions.  And her style…. It was as expected – completely ah-mazing!  We loved how she topped her Brunette the Label “Tracy” lace mock neck and cut-offs with a glossy BRUNETTE bomber.  Oh and that quilted Chanel bag? It was the icing on the cake.

The night was filled with good vibes, Boss Babes and some seriously sweet BLONDE and BRUNETTE cupcakes.  Guests left with their favourite cozy crew and a gifted Brunette the Label mug.  (Because the quotes we love are equally as amazing on take-everywhere mugs.)

We’ve had fun spotting Brunette the Label’s star-studded following sporting their favourite crews everywhere.  We think Jillian Harris nailed her her recent post with her bestie in a pair of iconic Blonde/Brunette tops.

In addition to cheeky crews, Brunette the Label has recently launched Brunette Collection, a full fashion range.  The line is on trend and still maintains that laid back look we love.  When I’m not living in my Brunette the Label sweatshirts, I’ll be dressing up in their newest fashion collection – there’s already a spot reserved in my closet  for the Carter leggings and Tracy lace top.

Q+A with Preloved

Before our event on Saturday we wanted to take a moment to chat with Julia Grieve, the founder of Preloved, who will be joining us in-store to showcase the Farminista x Preloved line. We love her story and can’t wait to showcase more fantastic collaboration pieces!

What inspires you as a designer?

At Preloved, I get a lot of our inspiration from taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary. For example, I’m often inspired by the vintage fabrics we source. Original button detail, plackets, patterns, pockets – we never know which direction they will take us in.

What is your favourite item in the spring Farminista x Preloved line?

The Jazz Festival Dress for sure!!! I remember when we were going over this style with Rox, she wanted the deadstock and the vintage to have some kind of contrast – how adventurous of her. But, I love how the end-product turned out, it’s so Preloved, yet with a touch of Farminista.

Why do you still make your collection in Canada?

Being able to keep every part of our brand truly Canadian, for the past 20 years, is probably our greatest accomplishment. With the support of our manufacturer, right here in Toronto, we have been able to cost-effectively produce a line that is of the highest quality, and coveted on the world stage. Staying in Canada was a conscious decision and one that has been a key factor in our success. It’s pretty incredible to be part of the “Made in Canada” brand. We couldn’t be more proud.

What inspired you to start your business?

The best ideas are the simplest ones. For Preloved, it was taking something old and make it new again. I have always had a love of vintage clothing, and the notion that what you are wearing is one-of-a-kind. The only problem is sometimes vintage clothing can have a bit of a “costume” feel…but, if you update it to give it a modern twist, then you have an incredible one-of-a-kind piece that is perfectly on trend. That was the idea behind Preloved, 20 years ago, and still is today!

Thanks Julia, for taking the time to answer our questions and we can’t wait to have you at the Tonic shop on Saturday!

Winter Guide To Long Layers

Long layers have been a key trend for the fall winter season. It has that chic minimalistic look that we are dying to get our hands on. This comfy chic minimalistic trend is definitely going to be staying in our wardrobe until spring comes around the corner (which is still a long haul away).

This coat is a great place to start when searching to add in some longer layers to your wardrobe.

It’s diversity allows you to wear it with honestly everything! Pair it with a turtle neck and the skinny pant for a modish look, or throw it over your polished dress for your next holiday soirée.

It can be dressed up or down, making it a great piece to have. Not to mention it keeps you warm during those chilly Vancouver nights.

To go for the ultimate long layer look there’s nothing better to pair this coat with then this maxi knit dress.

I am swooning over this beautiful knit dress. It is amazing to wear and easy to move in. Especially when you have a busy day of errands (uhum Christmas shopping)

There’s nothing better than looking stylish and having comfort all come together into one amazing piece.
