Summer Fades

With summer slowly fading away, we begin our transition into autumn.

Cherish the long summer days while you still can; the coziest season is coming upon us.

More Maxis Please!

PSA: Maxi dresses are in- and they’re here to stay! Finding the right style can be challenging (especially when taking into consideration your height, shape, etc.) but these days there are so many different cuts to choose from, there’s something for everyone.

We did a fun photo shoot with our favourite floral maxi, which we adore for its feminine, vintage vibes (i.e. fabric covered buttons, tie up waist line, dreamy cherry blossom print).

Maxi dresses are probably so popular because they make us feel beautiful- there’s something about wearing a floor length dress, adorned with lace or floral prints, that can make you feel extra special.

Long sleeved maxis are a great option for winter fashion as well- you can hide some warm leggings underneath and no one will know  better. We also love finding a maxi dress that is not only flattering, but also incredibly comfortable!

We like to let this type of dress speak for itself, so we pair it with simple, elegant jewelry.

If you love the idea of a floral maxi dress, but long sleeves just aren’t for you, we also have some beautiful strappy style maxis.

Prairie Bohemian

It seems like I’ve had a women’s clothing store forever, always looking for the fun dresses or outfits to bring in that could boost the confidence of anyone.
Year after year we always sell out of the most colourful and interesting dresses, anything fun and flowing with a hint of adventure is a sought after item.
Our collection is filled with these Prairie Bohemian styles.
We sometimes wonder what makes our customers different from the rest of the country? Maybe it’s because people here in the middle of the prairies travel so much? or, because we have such long white winters with big fluffy parkas covering our favourite outfits, so we cling to colour and pattern.
So many of our favourite customers come back from business trips and exotic world travels to let us how many compliments they get when they are traveling in their “Tonic” outfit. It’s so fun to know prairie girls have a distinct style, we love fashion, but with a twist, we add our own touch to an outfit to complete it, it’s the desire to be unique, true to oneself, fighting cookie cutter fashion by sneaking vintage favourites into an outfit to make it special.
I’m so happy that before I moved to this big location that I had time in my vintage shop in a historic little house, it was filled with funky clothes, crazy shoes, and just a hint of raver fashion.
Working with vintage items is a passion, mixing and matching nostalgia, loving an item and making it work with any outfit is the challenge with the reward of being you, no one else will have your look!

Q+A with Preloved

Before our event on Saturday we wanted to take a moment to chat with Julia Grieve, the founder of Preloved, who will be joining us in-store to showcase the Farminista x Preloved line. We love her story and can’t wait to showcase more fantastic collaboration pieces!

What inspires you as a designer?

At Preloved, I get a lot of our inspiration from taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary. For example, I’m often inspired by the vintage fabrics we source. Original button detail, plackets, patterns, pockets – we never know which direction they will take us in.

What is your favourite item in the spring Farminista x Preloved line?

The Jazz Festival Dress for sure!!! I remember when we were going over this style with Rox, she wanted the deadstock and the vintage to have some kind of contrast – how adventurous of her. But, I love how the end-product turned out, it’s so Preloved, yet with a touch of Farminista.

Why do you still make your collection in Canada?

Being able to keep every part of our brand truly Canadian, for the past 20 years, is probably our greatest accomplishment. With the support of our manufacturer, right here in Toronto, we have been able to cost-effectively produce a line that is of the highest quality, and coveted on the world stage. Staying in Canada was a conscious decision and one that has been a key factor in our success. It’s pretty incredible to be part of the “Made in Canada” brand. We couldn’t be more proud.

What inspired you to start your business?

The best ideas are the simplest ones. For Preloved, it was taking something old and make it new again. I have always had a love of vintage clothing, and the notion that what you are wearing is one-of-a-kind. The only problem is sometimes vintage clothing can have a bit of a “costume” feel…but, if you update it to give it a modern twist, then you have an incredible one-of-a-kind piece that is perfectly on trend. That was the idea behind Preloved, 20 years ago, and still is today!

Thanks Julia, for taking the time to answer our questions and we can’t wait to have you at the Tonic shop on Saturday!

October at Tonic and Farminista

With October slowly starting to fade out, and the transition into November begins (the month that I believe is socially acceptable to start playing Christmas music).

This month at Tonic has been a great one, seeing all the new fall fashions come in and seeing the joy and excitement for the most scenic month of the year makes me want to latch onto this month to ensure it doesn’t simmer away too fast.

I’ve gathered a few of my all-time favorites of this month to show you.

First, I want to talk to you guys about our jacket obsession. If you live anywhere in the prairies, you know jackets are a must.

Make an impression with your last layer!

The Jenny Wool Jacket makes it easy for you to do that.

Check out some of our other jackets!

This is a classic twist on any cardigan, and easily has been our best seller this season. It perfectly fits on any body type, and gives you a bit of extra length in the back so you can wear it with leggings!

Here is a quick link to check it out online:

We wouldn’t be Farminista if we didn’t include any of our head turning dresses. This dress is the definition of fall.

And finally- we are excited to be starting our very own line! Right now, we only have coffee mugs. But, we are working very hard to release more Prairie People goodies! Show off your prairie pride!
