Travel……BUG

After Christmas and New Years celebrations the weather always seems to take a turn for the worst and we end up in a deep freeze.  Not only is it too cold to walk the dog, but the sun sets before dinner and life begins to feel like it’s on repeat. Working in the shop becomes dangerous for our bank accounts.  The only customers braving the wind chill are stopping by while they wait to pick up their passports, or popping in to see if we have any shorts in yet so they can finish packing for the beach.  This is the time of year where we daydream about a tropical escape- well any escape, we would take Europe too!  A vacation in the dead of winter seems to speed us along into summer.  Even a week of running on the beach, or fresh cut grass makes the daily grind in winter seem more bearable.

A holiday is a time to explore and grow as a human, and it’s the time where you can wear a dress that stood out a bit too much in your small town, or try a new look with your hair and make up. We love helping people shop for their dream vacations.

Laila had people crowding around her in Paris while her friend Alan captured her beautiful lace dress in front of the Eiffel tower.

Ashley tried on a few different looks for her trip.

One of our longtime staff members, Kelsey, took this lovely lace dress on her Euro adventure. She made this dress uniquely her own though when she added personal touches- she laced up the deep-v neck so that this piece was day-time/cafe ready!img_6711 A maxi dress is always a great piece to have when you’re travelling- they are versatile enough to be worn on a day excursion, but also easy enough to dress up for a night on the town. We love this Venechia maxi wrap dress for its comfort and super fun pattern- this mama-to-be is wearing it in New Zealand!

The Versatile Little Black Dress

This spooky season is celebrated in many different ways, but it’s probably safe to say costumes are the best part (besides another excuse to overload on chocolate!). As a child, playing dress up out in public was exhilarating- wearing or being something you wouldn’t normally wear or be is always fun!

One of the downsides of being an “adult” may include lack of time and energy to come up with that fabulous costume of your dreams- this is where your little black dress comes in!

spooky4

You don’t necessarily have to dress up AS something- it’s perfectly acceptable to just be inspired by the season, and adorn yourself in black lace, velvet chokers, eccentric jewelry of any sort, and of course some smoky eye makeup (or all out face paint!).

We love this full on black lace dress– the vintage inspired floral lace pattern is beautiful. We of course paired it with our most trusted bamboo slip underneath.

Mesh is also a great alternative to lace, adding a bit more edge to any outfit.

Any holiday is an excuse to dress up- so take advantage!

Fall Expectations

2Y5A2038Just when the nights begin to get colder and the days a little shorter we start to anticipate the next few months.  The practical person would say it’s to prepare for the upcoming winter, to bring out the layers and plan for the chill.  But most of us just like the change, the change of life’s pace and routine.

2Y5A1474It’s the little things like meeting friends for coffee that you haven’t seen for months or planning big family potlucks and catching up on traditions.

Morning coffee with The Prairie People mug

Morning coffee is a priority thanks to darker earlier mornings.

Special nights out with friends to warm you after a chilly day consume your thoughts.

We love the lovely fall things that come in each day and have great expectations for what this fall will bring.

Prairie Bohemian Style

prairie_bohemianWhat does bohemian mean to you?

Do you think of artists, musicians or free spirited people?  We think of bohemian style as a relaxed, layered look, girls who like to take their favourite dress and pair it with a sweater, scarf or even add a kimono, or vest or crochet sweater and lots of accessories.

Desiree Martin has been taking pictures of friends and family for years, she put together this shoot with a few of her favourite creative friends. But also does weddings and other important occasions.  Because she grew up in the country she has an eye for natural beauty and that little sparkle you see in the bohemian girls eye that shows she’s just not like every other girl.

Growing up in the fashion industry and being surrounded by artists gave her the vision to create a bohemian mood in this stunning prairie environment.

We have long, cold winters, so when the hot prairie sun is out we spend as much time outside as possible.  To make a little shade for a picnic or a nap like we did use an old curtain or tablecloth, pack some snacks and your favourite drink and make some memories to get you through the next winter.  Oh, and don’t forget your guitar!

The Underrated Kimono

LIS_9280-691x460I love being home. Most people know this about me… and I’m never ashamed to admit that I am the definition of a homebody.

I know for some people lounging around the house means wearing less flattering clothing lol…such as husky sweats, flannel pj’s etc etc (and hey, there is nothing wrong with that). Perhaps because I work from home, I always feel better when I wear pretty things and things that make me comfortable. This is where elegance meets comfort when you can throw on a Kimono and a Kami Lace Short Strap Dress.  This is the perfect layering piece for all your leggings and cardigans. Toss on your Kimono and you can step outside and grab the mail without scaring your neighbours off.

You can even dress it up with a statement necklace and some pumps!  Kimono’s are very versatile and this little black dress features pretty lace detailing that adds elegance to your ensemble.
