Peek A Boo

Our favourite shirt just happens to have peek-a-boo shoulders.

LOVE LOCAL-0119

We spent last weekend showing off some of our new spring collection at a little Pop-Up shop in Anthology, one of the most beautifully curated home and flower shops in our city.

LOVE LOCAL-0126

The day was spent obsessing over all things fresh and new, we are so excited for a change in seasons and the fresh spring air.  Denim skirts are a big trend for us and we love this distressed, pencil skirt inspired one.  Especially when worn with little fringe ankle boots (like the ones in these pictures from Durand’s Footwear ).

LOVE LOCAL-0120

This top has a classic silhouette, but the shoulder cut outs and crochet detail keep things interesting. Every woman needs a cute black blouse in their wardrobe 😉

LOVE LOCAL-0097

P.S.

This macaroon is from Little Bird, we may just have to do a “Pop Up” here every weekend.

On pursuing yourself.

_MAT2382

As I’m sure any of you can relate to, I find that no matter how many times I free up my inhibitions to have my photo taken in public, I’m always still a little bit intimidated at the number of people who will stop to peek at the girl making funny poses, or so I presume. While this doesn’t sound like a very big deal (and really, it isn’t), it does make me wonder about the way we react, in general, to being observed vs. the way other people observe us. .

_MAT2356

I’m sure we’ve all been there – at a show or concert watching some cutie on stage, completely in his or her element, charismatically doling out chords. In instances like this, I’ll often find myself mesmerized by the experience of watching strangers exercise their passions – an intimate experience rarely had with someone I don’t know personally.

In fact, I’ve found that whenever I’m most in my element – most myself – is when I’ve felt the most appreciated.

_MAT2361

I’ve found that if I try to keep this in mind, it helps me to relax into a sort of exchange with the people who stop to watch the action. I feel as though most of what we perceive, in life, to be potential judgements on us are actually just mere curiosities. I really do think there’s something to the statement “we’re our own worst critic”. And I guess that’s one of the nicer aspects of getting older – allowing personal insecurities to meld and transform into strengths to be indulged in, by both ourselves and others.

_MAT2406

And, as always, this can be applied to what we wear. I feel so fortunate to live in an age and on a continent where freedom of expression is possible, where women can choose to adorn ourselves in a way that speaks to our souls. Stepping out of our comfort zones and into looks or behaviours that make us feel at home in ourselves, instead of clothed in insecurities, can be just as intimidating as the judgment we fear, but is So worth the risk.

While people often begin their new resolutions in January, I don’t think there’s ever a wrong time to learn to gently pursue ourselves.

Style Guide: A night out this NYE.

Screen Shot 2015-12-29 at 12.01.54 AM

I will look for any excuse to get glammed to the nines. Whether it’s coffee or a dash of Frangelico, any event is fare game for affirming my body with looks that express inner radiance. Contrary to popular belief however, this is a luxury afforded to all individuals. Glamour is where Vogue and Value Village are level as the fountain water of a summerhouse backyard.

Regardless of budget, NYE, however, is the ultimate occasion for glam. Now, whether this means sequins and nice nails or seven Fireballs and hunched wobbling in stilettos, through snow and into a sweaty cab is up to you. Either way, New Years Eve is a night for each individual to do and wear what makes us feel glamorous, kissing “good morning” to the days that lie ahead.

So without further delay, these are the looks that have caught my eye, this season, for NYE:

1) Head to toe in silver & gold.

main_original_0x1000c-56IMG_3648

THE EVERYGIRL, VOGUE

If a look to shine is on your mind, I mean. . these two are practically a given. While many might find a full-piece metallic intimidating, the key to achieving a balanced look in silver or gold is minimal to zero accessories. As shown above, fewer jewels are a graceful approach to sporting any full metallic look.

2) Sweaters and sequins, baby.

GLAMOUR Fashion, THE EVERYGIRL

Elegant and effortlessly (although probably not haha) chic, this look is confident and comfortable, religiously keeping the fun in NYE.

3) Ultra-glammy rompers!

VOGUE

Cuz nothin says “fun” like a onesie. All jokes aside, these sparkly rompers breathe party-time. For a more sophisticated look, however, the full-length leg is the way to go. As modelled above, a naturalistic hair look can help to tame a sassy romper.

4) All black, high neck peek-a-boo.

Eonline, VOGUE

Uh-huh honey. This look is sexsayyyy. With a high neckline in sombre black, the peek-a-boo look is all about choosing your place to show skin. A cut out or sheer fabric is the perfect way to add a more intimate feel to your ensemble while honing a graceful approach to that NYE glamour. Think Riri or Dita Von Teese.

And last but certainly not least. .

5) All-over black and glitta in ooooneee!

FASHION GONE ROGUE, VOGUE

There can be too much of a good thing. . . so then you just wear all those good things together, naturally. As demonstrated by the above goddesses of music and film, shimmering statement pieces atop a demure, velvet black is where it’s at. Don’t ever be afraid to get a little freaky on NYE or any day. Living, breathing glamour is infinitely more diverse than media portrayals of “glamorous” women.

So let’s let the year ahead be about choosing to express ourselves not how we’re told to, but in a way that lets the insides of our minds shine like diamonds. While fashion articles may find you a show-stopping look, never forget that it’s the freedom on your face and your confidence in what you choose to wear that makes you radiant and glamorous.

Have fun and express yourself, this NYE,

x

Try Temporary Tattoos This Season!

Temporary tattoos are the perfect way to add some shimmer to your outfit without having to overload on accessories. Not only are they super easy to apply, but they last for about a week and are something that will help you stand out from the crowd at any Christmas or New Years party!

How to apply our temporary tattoos:

  1. Cut out the design of your choice.
  2. Remove the transparent cover film.
  3. Place your tattoo face down on your skin.
  4. Rub the back of your tattoo firmly with a damp cloth or sponge for about 10-20 seconds
  5. Gently lift the corner of your tattoo to check if it has transferred. Gently peel off paper. If it has not transferred, press down and wet again.
  6. Allow your tattoo to dry.

October at Tonic and Farminista

With October slowly starting to fade out, and the transition into November begins (the month that I believe is socially acceptable to start playing Christmas music).

This month at Tonic has been a great one, seeing all the new fall fashions come in and seeing the joy and excitement for the most scenic month of the year makes me want to latch onto this month to ensure it doesn’t simmer away too fast.

I’ve gathered a few of my all-time favorites of this month to show you.

12081188_512324645592071_1503340048_n

First, I want to talk to you guys about our jacket obsession. If you live anywhere in the prairies, you know jackets are a must.

Make an impression with your last layer!

The Jenny Wool Jacket makes it easy for you to do that.

Check out some of our other jackets!

This is a classic twist on any cardigan, and easily has been our best seller this season. It perfectly fits on any body type, and gives you a bit of extra length in the back so you can wear it with leggings!

We wouldn’t be Farminista if we didn’t include any of our head turning dresses. This dress is the definition of fall.

And finally- we are excited to be starting our very own line! Right now, we only have coffee mugs. But, we are working very hard to release more Prairie People goodies! Show off your prairie pride!

Constructing Your Fall Best

The leaves are continuing to fall, which means it’s inevitably going to get chilly. The thing I always seem to struggle with in the fall is how to continue to wear the summer dresses that I’ve grown to know and love all throughout summer. Finally it dawned on me. Whenever it starts to get cold (especially in the prairies, it seems we start to get colder here right after August ends), my mom would always tell me to layer (although layering to my mom is sweater, after sweater, after sweater). So, I forced my sister out of her busy life- working full time during her practicum as well as away from her study time (sorry sis, thank you and love you.) and took her to my favorite spot (and if you ask me, one of the most beautiful places in this city) to help me help you show how to wear dresses during this season.

DSC_0017

Some dresses are made for this transition season (which makes my troubles slightly easier) just like our Estella Dress. As soon as I saw this in our store- Tonic, I fell in love immediately and knew I had to share it with you.

DSC_0020

They can easily be worn as is, or can be paired with accessories such as our favorite hat, the Carmen HatDSC_0024

Another simple way to elevate your outfit to the next level in fall is a scarf. The thing I absolutely love about scarves is how versatile they are (if you’re anything like me, you watch those YouTube videos on how to transform your scarf into 50+ different outfits in absolute awe). This scarf, our very own Agnes Weaved Scarf is perfect for any outfit, with its neutral colours and pattern.

But, there’s another way we can further elevate this dress…

DSC_0045

If you’re anything like myself, autumn automatically means cardigans. I adore cardigans-practically living in them all seasons (even the summer, I’ve just slowly allowed myself to adapt to the extra heat I’m forcing myself to withstand.)

DSC_0050

And cardigans with this dress looks absolutely amazing, creating the perfect outfit while staying cozy.

Our Mae Cardigan is perfect for fall, its seriously the coziest thing I’ve ever worn.

DSC_0056

Plaid is huge every fall.  A good way to wear your favorite plaid shirt is slightly less traditional. Wear it around your waist. Doing this, it cinches in your waist while still looking awesome.

DSC_0062

Or, if you’re slightly more traditional, wear it as a regular shirt!

The Erik Semi Long Plaid is another one of my fall favorites this season. The best part about it, is that its longer than most shirts (which makes it easier to pair with dresses!).

DSC_0073

Another thing that has been huge this fall (and for good reason- they’re awesome) are poncho scarves. They add the perfect touch to any outfit-fancy or casual. It seems we went for the fancier approach for this outfit, which worked well in our favor as you can see, after about 40 minutes of taking pictures and 10 minutes of my sister frantically changing in the car while I tried to find a secluded area that people wouldn’t see her change, the sun set and we were going berserk trying to finish these pictures.

For this outfit, we paired the Stuck On You Dress with the Kirin Poncho Scarf to make this (accidental- but it works) “heading out on the town while still keeping warm and looking (as my sister would say) sassy” outfit.
